Siliconization

Finishing and converting solutions for maximum precision and efficiency

UV dryer systems operating under oxygen-reduced conditions represent the cutting-edge form of UV curing. In this process, the oxygen in the process area is replaced by nitrogen, meaning that the crosslinking reaction of UV-reactive inks and coatings, as well as silicones (release paper/film), takes place under so-called inert conditions.
This offers clear advantages: inks, varnishes, and coatings cure faster and more efficiently. At the same time, due to an improved degree of crosslinking, product properties such as scratch resistance and chemical resistance of surfaces can be optimized. Curing under nitrogen almost completely eliminates the typical UV odor, while the formation of ozone and yellowing are avoided.
With our Inert UV drying systems, residual oxygen levels below 30 ppm (required, for example, for the siliconization of release liners) can be achieved even at the highest production speeds. Hoenle not only supplies the Inert UV dryer chamber itself; components for residual oxygen measurement and the N₂ gas distribution system—including process-dependent flow control—complete the portfolio and ensure maximum product quality, outstanding process reliability, and reduced resource consumption.
With our expertise, we design the tailored integration solutions for both new installations and retrofitting existing production lines, always in close partnership with our customers.

Applications

Inert-UV technology for siliconization uses nitrogen (N₂) to displace oxygen from the reaction chamber, preventing oxygen from interfering with the radical curing of silicones. This inert atmosphere results in faster, more complete curing, improved product quality, and enhanced surface properties such as lower tackiness, creating advantages for applications like release coatings and high-precision medical devices.

This technology is crucial for applications like silicone release liner production for tapes or labels, where a perfectly smooth and tack-free surface is essential, siliconization of papers and films for packaging and for specialty substrates or medical devices needing precise, high-quality silicone components.

Hoenle inert-UV systems cure silicone rapidly under oxygen-free conditions, resulting in a high-quality, fully polymerized material.
