Case Study UV-C Technology Ensures Reliable Lid Disinfection in Dairy Packaging Machinery
Every cup or bottle of yogurt, milk or cream is only as hygienic as the lid or film that seals it. Because dairy products offer an ideal environment for microbial growth, even a small amount of contamination on the sealing surface can compromise an entire batch. This makes lid and foil disinfection one of the most safety-critical steps built into modern dairy filling lines – and it is exactly the challenge an established Chinese manufacturer of aseptic and form-fill-seal (FFS) filling machinery for the dairy industry set out to solve for its own customers.
Controlling a Common Dairy Contaminant, Batch After Batch
The organism at the centre of the challenge was Bacillus atrophaeus (ATCC 9372, historically also referred to as Bacillus subtilis var. niger) – a spore-forming bacterium that is common in dairy production environments and notoriously resistant to inactivation. For the machinery manufacturer’s end customers, who set strict quality and safety requirements for their finished dairy products, reliably controlling this organism on every lid was non-negotiable. Left unresolved, inconsistent lid disinfection carries a very concrete risk: entire batches of product can be rejected as defective before they ever reach a shelf.
Chemical-Free, High-Throughput Disinfection Built for a Compact Machine
The requirement the manufacturer set for the disinfection step was clear and measurable: a 99.9% kill rate against Bacillus atrophaeus (ATCC 9372), achieved without chemicals, since no cleaning agents can be introduced this close to a food-contact surface. Because the module also had to run at high line speed inside a compact machine footprint, two alternative approaches were weighed alongside medium-pressure UV-C. Pulsed light delivers high doses in short bursts, but its bright flashes and noise are a real consideration for equipment operating on a production floor with staff nearby. Conventional low-pressure UV-C, the technology already familiar to the manufacturer from earlier lamp arrays of up to twelve lamps, generates its dose more gradually and needs more lamps – and therefore more installation space and thermal management – to reach the same performance. Neither fit the combination of dose, speed and compactness the new machine generation required.
A Globally Recognized Benchmark for Disinfection Performance
Bacillus atrophaeus ATCC 9372 is not an arbitrary test organism: because its spores are unusually resistant, it is one of the internationally established biological indicator strains used to validate non-thermal sterilization and disinfection processes, referenced in standards such as ISO 11138 for biological indicators. In China, dairy producers and their equipment suppliers additionally operate under the national food safety standard GB 12693 (Good Manufacturing Practice for Dairy Products), which sets strict hygiene requirements for equipment and any material that comes into contact with the product. Choosing a disinfection technology validated against ATCC 9372 gives the machinery manufacturer’s customers a benchmark that is recognized well beyond a single production site.
High Dose, Small Footprint: Why UVATEC Was Selected
